WAUKESHA, Wis. -- The Augustana Vikings softball team fell in a road doubleheader on Monday, dropping a pair of one-run games against the Carroll Pioneers by a score of 2-1 (12 inn.) and 3-2.
Game One (L 2-1, 12 inn.)
Defense and pitching highlighted the opening game as the two teams combined for just three runs in 12 innings. Augie got on the board early on in the second inning as
Sydney Ohrtmann came in to score on a Carroll throwing error to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead. The one-run advantage for Augustana held all the way until the seventh inning when they Pioneers finally evened it up at one run apiece, also on a defensive error.Â
The 1-1 score remained in tact for four additional innings as neither team could push across the go-ahead run. Carroll began the bottom half of the 12th with two singles in the middle of a fly out and fielder's choice, setting up a two-out RBI single to walk-off the game and give them the 2-1 victory.
Despite the low score, the two teams accounted for 20 combined hits. Ohrtmann,
Nichole Nash, and
Morgan Bielfeldt all had two hits for the Vikings.Â
Game Two (L 3-2)
The Pioneers struck first in the finale, plating two in their opening at-bat for the early lead. An RBI double from
Ashley Dehmlow in the bottom of the fourth cut the margin in half, but Carroll earned the run right back in the top half of the fifth to push the differential back out to two.
Augustana inched closer in the bottom of the sixth thanks to a run-scoring single from
Nadia Ranieri. The Vikings saw the tying run reach third base in both the sixth and seventh inning, but were unable to cash it in and the Pioneers held on for the 3-2 win to complete the doubleheader sweep.
For the second consecutive game, Augie had three members with multi-hit performances as Ohrtmann, Bielfeldt, and
Claire Weeks all tallied two hits for the Vikings.
With the losses, Augustana drops to 18-13 overall and 4-8 overall in CCIW action. The team will be back in action on Thursday, April 28 when they take on the Dubuque Spartans on the road in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
