GROVE CITY Pa. — Alyssa Fricker scored seven times, including all four of the team's four first-quarter goals, as the No. 3 seeded Augie women's water polo team defeated the No. 6 seeded Penn State Behrend Lions by a score of 17-2 in the opening game of the CWPA DIII Championships on the campus of Grove City College.
The Vikings posted a 4-0 advantage after the first eight minutes, all coming off of the hand of Fricker. Jillian Hagmann scored twice with in the first four minutes of the second period, followed by a goal from Ocean Akau with over a minute remaining. The Lions got on the board with 53 seconds left in the first half to make it 7-1 heading into the break.
Augie tallied another 7-0 scoring run, this time in the third quarter alone as Akau got things started just 14 seconds in. Fricker contributed the final three of her seven goals in the third and goals from Annie Opal Dickson and Sophie Arceneaux brought the score to 14-1 after three quarters of play. Augustana's balanced attack continued to shine in the final frame, seeing scores from Lauren Dickinson and Jasmin Aponte before Hagmann completed her hat trick to bring their tally to 17. Penn State Behrend added one more of their own in the fourth to conclude the contest with the 17-2 final score.Â
Augustana will move on to the semifinals to face the winner of No. 2 seed Washington & Jefferson and No. 7 seed Wittenberg tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. CST. The Vikings can clinch a spot in the DIII national tournament with a victory.
