Vikings to start CCIW schedule with road trip at Carthage

Two of CCIW's top teams set to face off on Saturday

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Augustana men's lacrosse (6-2) is set to open CCIW competition this weekend with a stiff road test. The Vikings will visit Carthage on Saturday, Apr. 2 for a 3:30 P.M. start.

Carthage enters the weekend with a 7-2 record in non-conference play. Carthage opened their season on a five-game winning streak. Prior to their most recent match, Carthage lost three of four games to Berry College, Birmingham Southern College, and Hope College. The Firebirds are coming off a high-scoring 17-12 win over Benedictine.
 
Andrew Johnson leads the Firebirds' offensive attack with 44 total points including 30 goals on 93 shots and 14 assists. Other key contributors include George Burchfield with 20 goals and 18 assists, and Andrew Frey with 19 scores.
 
Defensively, Sam Wallace and Jameson Stahl are solid on Carthage back end with 22 and 11 caused turnovers, respectively. Blake Raphael and Hayden Jones have been the primary goalkeepers for the Firebirds. Raphael has started eight of Carthage's nine games and recorded 103 saves while allowing 73 goals.
 
Augustana and Carthage have faced each other 12 times since the 2012 season. The Firebirds hold a significant 10-2 advantage in the all-time series and are currently on a five-game winning streak against Augie. The Vikings' last win over Carthage came in 2016 in a 10-7 home victory.
