Baseball ends Gene Cusic Classic with 8-5 loss to Bluffton

Two ninth-inning long balls propel Beavers to victory

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Augie baseball finished play at the 2022 Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic this morning with a game against the Beavers of Bluffton University. The Vikings battled Bluffton for nine innings before Bluffton exploded in the final frame to clinch the 8-5 victory.

Both teams saw early productivity in the Monday-morning matchup. In the top of the first inning, Jake Baumgartner tripled to bring lead-off man Kenny Schneider across for the game's first run. Later in the inning, Baumgartner was driven home on an RBI single to give the Beavers a 2-0 lead. Augustana struck back in the home half of the first with two runs of their own on a Kyle Wise single.

The Vikings eventually took their first, and what would be their final, lead of the game in the fifth inning when Alex Simon's sacrifice fly plated Chase Maifield.

In the sixth, Bluffton tied the game again on a bases loaded fielder's choice off the bat of sophomore outfielder Grant Hovest. The Beavers extended their lead in the top of the ninth inning with an impressive power display. Two Bluffton batters delivered back-to-back home runs to extend their advantage to 8-3.

Augustana did its best to rally in the home half of the final stanza with two RBI singles from Simon and Matt Ozanic, however the Bluffton defense held off Augie's late charge for the 8-5 victory.

The top of Augustana's order led the Vikings with six combined hits, three RBI, and two runs. Jacob Barker and Simon both went 2-for-4 with a run scored while Simon drove in two more. Ozanic had a pair of base hits in his five at bats with one RBI. Elswhere, Wise also drove in two runs with a hit and a walk.

Josh Wintroub started for the Vikings but earned a no decision after throwing 6.2 innings with nine strikeouts and three walks. Bryce Luckey took the loss on the hill with just one out recorded and three runs allowed. Bluffton reliever Wyatt Groves tallied a win for the Beavers with three innings and three strikeouts to his credit.

The Vikings will be back in action on Wednesday, Mar. 9 for their home opener against Knox at 3:00 P.M.
