Baseball to open league play with three-game series at Carroll

Vikings seeking solid start to conference slate

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Augustana baseball (14-3) is set to begin CCIW play this weekend with a three-game series at Carroll. The trio of games was originally set to begin with a double-header on Saturday, but due to weather and other conditions, the schedule has been changed. The Vikings and Pioneers will now square off once on Friday, Apr. 1 and finish the set with a double-header on Sunday, Apr. 3.
 
Carroll enters the weekend with a 7-10 overall record and are coming off a win in their last time out after a canceled double-header with Dominican. The Pioneers defeated Wisconsin Lutheran 15-4 in a seven-inning affair for their most recent win.
 
Justin Baker leads a handful of Pioneer position players with a .421 average. Josh Kolb, Casey Mir, and Brad Vosters are also hitting at a .300+ clip so far. Additonally, Baker leads the club in slugging percentage (.579), hits (24), and total bases (33). Vosters has been exceptional getting on base as well with a team-high 19 walks and 20 runs scored.
 
Drew McDermid has been the horse for the Pioneer pitching staff in the early stages of the season. He leads the team with 20.0 innings pitched and is second on the team with 15 strikeouts. Bryce Spaulding has K'd the most opposing hitters with 16 strikeouts in 15.1 innings on the hill.
 
Since 2009, Augustana has controlled the series with Carroll. The Vikings lead the rivalry 11-4 in that time frame including wins in five of the last six contests.
