Men’s lacrosse beats Alma in fast-paced 13-11 battle

Four-goal third quarter too much for Scots as Vikings take road win

ALMA, Mich. – Augustana men's lacrosse (5-2) earned their fifth-consecutive win this afternoon in a 13-11 triumph at Alma College (3-5). The Scots tested Augustana in the final period, but the Vikings did just enough to capture the up-and-down victory.

Augustana started the scoring with two goals in the first two minutes of action. Mark Teschke delivered the first blow before Sam Shaver was assisted by Brady Holtz. Alma countered Augie's early flurry with a four-goal run of their own. Drew Gulick, Haden Johnson, and Byron Weber struck in the first period and Weber found the net again to start the second quarter and give the Scots a 4-2 lead.

Augustana bounced back with another offensive flurry including scores from Elijah Graesser and Carson Ghys plus another from Teschke. Trailing 5-4, the Scots rattled off another trio of goals midway through the second period to recapture the lead. With roughly two minutes to play in the half, Augustana's John Calabrese and Graesser delivered two more scores to tie the game. Alma had the last laugh in the first half, though, with another Haden Johnson goal to take an 8-7 advantage into the break.

After halftime, Augustana owned the third quarter with four more goals and stellar defense. Ghys, Teschke, Graesser, and Holtz put the Vikings up 11-8 entering the final period.

Alma got one step closer to start the fourth on an unassisted Gulick score, and eventually narrowed the Augustana lead to just one goal but could not make up for the Vikings' explosive third quarter.

Teschke, Shaver, and Graesser all recorded hat tricks for the Vikings with three goals apiece. Calabrese also had a game-high 10 ground balls for the Vikings.

In goal, Cameron Duffy recorded 17 saves in the Viking victory.

Augustana will return home for their next contest. The Vikings are set to host Cornell College on Wednesday, Mar. 30.
