SPRINGFIELD, Ohio -- The Augustana Vikings women's water polo team will get their first look at teams within their own league beginning on Saturday, March 26 when they head to Ohio for three Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) contests.
Within the CWPA, the Vikings currently sit ranked No. 2 in the latest top five poll, five points behind the Austin Roos, who they will see this upcoming weekend. Augie has gone two weeks since their last game, which was a close 10-9 defeat to the McKendree Bearcats at home. The third quarter was a key momentum shifter as the visitors put up a 3-0 margin to turn the one-point halftime deficit into a two-point lead in their favor after three complete. McKendree added one more to start the fourth to push the score to 9-6, the largest lead from either team in the game. Augustana inched closer and cut it to one following two scores from
Alyssa Fricker, but a power-play counter from the Bearcats made it 10-8. Fricker added another at the 1:23 mark, but a late stop from McKendree allowed them to hang on with the one-point win. The freshman had seven goals in the contest to lead the Vikings.
On Saturday, Augustana will take on the Macalester Scots in their first game of the weekend at 4:00 p.m. CST. The Scots are currently ranked fourth in the CWPA top five. Macalester currently sits 1-7 on the year after a very similar schedule to Augie to begin the year. The Scots defeated Cal Tech earlier this month for their lone win. The team was defeated by Redlands 14-8 in their most recent outing.
The Vikings will face two teams on Sunday, starting bright and early at 7:00 a.m. CSTÂ with a key matchup against Austin. This will be their first of two meetings during the regular season. The Roos are 2-6 so far this season and are ranked No. 5 nationally in the DIII poll.
Later in the day, Augustana will take on the host school Wittenberg Tigers at 12:30 p.m. CST. The Tigers rank third in the latest CWPA poll, just five points behind the Vikings. Wittenberg sports a 5-9 record this season and are undefeated in three games against teams within the CWPA. The Tigers defeated Connecticut College in their most recent contest by a score of 24-9.
