HILTON HEAD, S.C. -- The Augustana Vikings women's tennis team was narrowly defeated on Wednesday down in South Carolina, falling to the Allegheny Gators by a score of 5-4.
The Gators began the match with two of three doubles wins to take a 2-1 lead into singles.
Mia Reese and
Michaela Magee collected the lone win for the Vikings at the No. 3 doubles spot by a score of 8-0. At the No. 1 position,
Lily Schoeck and
Caitlyn Hanulikova dropped a close one in a tiebreaker, losing 8-7 (6) to round out doubles action.
In singles, the two teams split 3-3, which allowed the Gators to escape with the one-point match win. Augie notched wins in the top three singles positions, with Schoeck grabbing a 6-2, 7-6 (5) win at the top slot. Magee defeated her opponent in consecutive sets 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 2 spot, while Hanulikova squeaked out a come-from-behind 4-6, 7-5. 1-0 (9) victory at No. 3. Allegheny took matches 4-6 to hold on to the 5-4 triumph.
Augustana drops to 6-12 overall with the loss. The team will be back in action on Saturday, April 9 at home versus Illinois Tech. Start time is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. from the Lower Campus Courts.
