CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Augustana Vikings softball team improved to 9-2 on the season, their best start since 2018, following a come-from behind victory over the Hamilton Continentals on Monday as part of THE Spring Games in Florida. The Vikings scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth to knock off the previously one-loss Hamilton squad by a score of 8-6.
Both the Vikings and Continentals grabbed a run in their opening at-bats in the first inning, with Augie answering Hamilton in the bottom half with a
Nichole Nash RBI double to even the game. The Continentals added one in the second and two more in the fourth to make it a 4-1 advantage in their favor. The Vikings had runners in scoring position in three of the next four innings, but were unable to scratch any across as the 4-1 margin was brought into the sixth.Â
Hamilton added two more runs in the top half of the sixth to cushion their lead to five, but Augustana answered with a seven-spot in their bottom half thanks to six hits and two errors. Trailing by five, the Vikings saw a walk and back-to-back singles to load the bases up with nobody out.
Meghan Nixon then brought in the first runs of the frame, sending a double to left-center to bring in two and make it 6-3. During the next at-bat, Nash put one in play and reached on an error to bring in another and was then followed by a two-run double from
Morgan Bielfeldt that tied the game at six runs apiece. After another single, a strikeout ensued to bring it to two outs, but another RBI double, this time by
Ashlyn Mathers, gave them the go-ahead run.
Amanda Page retired the Continentals in order in the seventh to give Augie the win, their fifth in a row.
The Vikings out-hit the Continentals 13-6, led by a 4-4 performance from
Nadia Ranieri.
Ashlyn Mathers also had a multi-hit performance, finishing 2-4. A total of nine Vikings collected a hit.
With the win, the Vikings improve to 9-2 overall. The team will be back in action on Tuesday, March 22 when they take on Gustavus Adolphus and UW-Whitewater in consecutive games beginning at 8:00 a.m. CST.
