CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- The Augustana Vikings men's and women's tennis teams were defeated on Sunday on the road, falling to the Coe Kohawks by scores of 8-1 and 5-4, respectively.
The Augie men fell behind after the Kohawks swept doubles play to take a 3-0 lead in the math. Coe went on to take five of six singles to pick up the home victory by a score of 8-1.
Nicolas Navarro picked up a hard-fought win at No. 5 singles, defeating his opponent in three sets by a score of 6-2, 4-6, 10-8.
The Viking men drop to 0-5 on the year with the loss and will face Illinois Tech on the road in their next contest on Saturday, March 5. Start time is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. from Chicago.
Later in the day, the Viking women dropped a close contest in their first match of the fall season. Augie took a 2-1 lead into singles following wins in doubles from
Lauren Oda/
Grace Rider at No. 2 and
Mia Reese/
Michaela Magee in the No. 3 position. The tandem of Oda and Rider were victorious 8-2, while Reese and Magee earned an 8-3 win for Augie.
Augustana and Coe split the first two matches of singles to bring it to a 3-2 advantage for the Vikings. The Kohawks charged back to win three of the final and escape with the one-point win. Magee and
Caitlyn Hanulikova earned wins in singles play for Augie, winning at No. 2 and 3 singles in consecutive sets.
The Augie women fall to 5-8 overall on the season and will play at UW-Whitewater in their next outing on Saturday, March 12.
