ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The Augustana men's lacrosse team is set to begin their 2022 season this weekend. The Vikings will embark on a road trip to Lisle, Ill. for their season debut againt the Benedictine Eagles.
Augustana will look to improve upon their even .500 campaign a season ago when they finished 6-6 overall and 2-4 in league play. Head coach
Dan Torie will be relying on a strong nucleus of experienced players including junior defender
Paul Huber, senior attacker
Mark Teschke, and senior midfielder
Matt Pierson.
The Vikings' first opponent, Benedictine, had a remarkable 2021 season including an undefeated 6-0 run in NACC action and an impressive 13-3 overall mark. However, the Eagles graduated Colin Domek and Nic Perkins, their top two goal scorers, and will need to fill those roles from other offensive players like senior Scott Ransom and sophomore Tanner Davidson. The Benedictine defense looks to be solid as well with the return of senior goalkeeper Evan Kilbane who started 15 games last season and made 125 total saves across his 10-3 record.
The Vikings and Eagles have faced off on seven previous occasions with Augustana holding a firm 6-1 advantage in the series. Benedictine's only win over Augie came in 2020 by a 14-9 score at Lisle.
