Box Score 4 SAINT PAUL, Minn. -- The Augustana women's water polo team earned their first win in its short program history over the weekend, picking up a victory in the first of four games at the Macalester Invite. The Vikings defeated No. 9 ranked Occidental by a score of 11-7 to jumpstart the weekend.
In the victory, Augie jumped to a 3-2 lead over the Tigers after one quarter of play, thanks to two goals from
Alyssa Fricker and another from
Victoria Guest. Occidental tallied two of the first three scores in the second quarter to force a tie at 4-4 before notching one more with just 30 seconds remaining to take a 5-4 advantage. The Vikings sent in a late goal form
Charlotte Newport with 14 seconds left to bring the game to a 5-5 deadlock at intermission.
Augustana held Occidental scoreless for almost the entirety of the third period until the Tigers put one into the back of the net with a second remaining. Until that point, the Vikings had cushioned themselves with three scores from three different members, including the third of the game from Fricker. Augie led 8-6 heading into the fourth. Just 14 seconds into the final quarter, Fricker added another, followed by one more from
Annie Opal Dickson to give the Vikings a four-point lead. Each team secured an additional goal before time ran out, giving Augustana the 11-7 victory for their first-ever program win. Fricker finished the contest with five goals.
Later in the day, the Vikings matched up with the Leopards of La Verne. Augie found themselves up after one half of action, leading the No. 6 ranked team in the nation 7-5 at the break. Fricker tallied four of the team's seven goals through two quarters, including three in the first alone to lead the Vikings. She finished the game with six.
The third and fourth quarters belonged to the Leopards, outscoring the Vikings 11-4 the rest of the way. A 5-1 differential in the third allowed them to flip the two-point deficit into a two-point lead, closing out the fourth with five of the eight goals scored. La Verne won the game by a score of 15-11.
On Sunday, Augustana faced off with No. 5 ranked Chapman to begin the day. The Vikings erased an early 5-1 deficit with five of the final six goals scored in the first half to tie the game at 6-6 at the break. The two teams traded goals throughout the third, with Chapman tallying one more in the final seconds to carry a 10-9 advantage into the final frame. Four straight goals to begin the fourth made it five consecutive overall and the Panthers held on for the 15-10 victory. Fricker posted a team-high five goals for Augustana.
In the second match of the day, the Vikings took on the Spirit of Ottawa (Ariz.) to close out the weekend trip. The two teams saw a high-scoring first quarter, with the Spirit jumping out to a quick 5-1 lead. The Vikings charged back to cut it to one with three straight goals, but Ottawa closed out the frame with two of their own to make it 7-4 after eight minutes of action. Goals were not as common in the second with just three combined between the two. The Spirit grabbed the first two, followed by one from the Vikings to bring halftime score to 9-5 in favor of Ottawa.
The Spirit grew their margin to as many as five in the third quarter, but the Vikings hung around with two scores to close it out and trailed 13-10 heading into the final period. Ottawa answered with the first three of the fourth and held on with 17-11 victory.
Lauren Dickinson pushed through a goal in each quarter to finish with a team-high four to lead Augie.
With the weekend results, Augustana sits at 1-4 on the young season. The team will have some time off before heading to California the first weekend of March for the Claremont Convergence. Their next scheduled contest will be March 4 on the road against No. 6 La Verne.
