KENOSHA, Wis. -- Dan Carr became just the sixth player ever in Augustana Vikings men's basketball history to haul in at least 24 rebounds in a single game as his 26-point, 24-rebound effort helped lift the Vikings to an 87-66 road victory over the Carthage Firebirds on Saturday.
"He was phenomenal," said head coach
Tom Jessee. "We rode the back of him tonight and he led us to a great road win."
Carr scored 18 of his 26 points in the first half as the Vikings held onto a 43-36 lead at the break. Augie trailed by as many as six points just under seven minutes in, but responded with a 9-1 run over the course of the next four minutes to regain an advantage of their own. The lead changed hands a few times until three straight made three-pointers put the Vikings up nine. Augustana grew the margin to as many as 12, but Carthage closed the half with two consecutive buckets to make it a seven-point differential after 20 minutes of play.
After scoring the final four points of the first half, the Firebirds hit the second half's first basket with a three-pointer to cut the margin to four. Augustana answered with eight straight and eventually grew their second half advantage to as large as 21 points, which proved to be the game's final score margin.
While a majority of his points came in the first half, Carr saw a monster number in the rebounding category in the final 20 minutes, tallying 16 of his career-best 24 boards in the second half. He now sits tied for fourth in the record books for most rebounds in a game and the first player to tally at least 24 in a game since Shane Price did so against North Central in 1981. Price's 27 against the Cardinals in that game currently sits number one in the Augustana men's basketball record book. Carr's 24 boards is the seventh most in all of NCAA DIII this season.
Joining Carr on the offensive attack in double figures was
Luke Johnson, who tallied 14 points to go with five rebounds and six assists.
Tyler Knuth also tallied double digits, ending his night with 12 points on four made threes. The Vikings ended the game shooting 48.5 percent from the field and over 50 percent from behind the arc.Â
With the win, Augustana improves to 11-13 overall and 6-9 in the CCIW. The Vikings remain in the sixth and final qualifying spot for the upcoming CCIW tournament and clinch a spot as early as Wednesday with a North Park loss against Wheaton. Augie is back in action on Saturday, February 19 for Senior Night when they host No. 9 Illinois Wesleyan. Tip is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. from inside the Carver Center.
