Women's basketball dropped by Carthage on the road

KENOSHA, Wis. – Augie women's basketball traveled to Wisconsin on Saturday to face the Carthage Firebirds for their fourth conference matchup of the season. Despite a late second-half resurgence, the Vikings fell short by a 68-56 final to move their season record to 7-4.

An explosive start from deep put Carthage in the first-half driver's seat, converting 11 of their 13 three-point attempts. Augie shot at just a 25 percent clip on 7-28 shooting in the half and entered the locker room down 43-19.

Augie got rolling offensively in the third frame, dropping in 22 points on 41 percent shooting. Corey Whitlock was a spark offensively and she continued to convert her open looks, scoring nine points in the period while hauling in five boards. The Vikings trailed 60-41 entering the final quarter.

The Vikings continued to build on their second-half comeback effort, opening with an 11-4 run to begin the fourth. With a once 24-point lead cut down to just 10, the Firebirds ate valuable clock and got to the line to snuff out the Augie comeback attempt.

With the road loss Augie moves to 7-4 on the season, sporting a 2-2 record in CCIW play.

Whitlock led the Vikings' scoring effort, contributing season-high point and rebound totals with 21 and 11. Gabriela Loiz was the only other Viking to eclipse double-digit points with 14. Augie dominated Carthage on the glass, hauling in 48 boards to the Firebirds' 28. The rebound total of 48 tied a season-high, while 21 offensive boards are the most on the year.

Augie returns home after Christmas, matching up against UW-Platteville in their return to the Carver Center on December 28. Tip-off for the non-conference matchup is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
