Women's basketball falls to Pioneers in low-scoring affair

ROCK ISLAND – Augie women's basketball team dropped a non-conference contest in their return to the Carver Center on Wednesday, falling to the UW-Platteville Pioneers by a 56-46 score.

The opening frame teed off with aggressive three-point shooting as more than half of either team's attempts came from deep. The Pioneers found more success from beyond the arc, shooting 5-9, while the Vikings converted just 2-7 attempts.

The Vikings moved on from their early shooting woes, converting over 63 percent of their field goals in the second frame. Augie's bench contributed 13 of their 16 points, cutting the Pioneer lead to just three entering the half.

Neither team eclipsed double-digit point totals in a low-scoring third frame. Augie briefly tied the contest for the first time since the opening tip at the 7:06 mark before the Pioneers wrestled back a 40-37 lead to close the period.

Augie's comeback effort was snuffed out in the final frame as costly turnovers plagued the Vikings. The Pioneers put together a plus-seven fourth quarter to close out the 10-point victory.

Eight different Vikings contributed scores in the loss, though none surpassed double-digit point totals. Carly Stone led the way offensively, notching an eight point effort. Augie edged Platteville on the glass, bringing down 38 boards to the Pioneers' 26. Corey Whitlock registered two blocks in the contest, tying a season-high, with her other performance coming on November 18 against Dubuque.

With the loss, Augustana moves to 7-5 on the season and will look to halt a two-game skid. Augie hits the road again for their final contest of 2022 when they match up against the Monmouth Fighting Scots on December 30. Tip-off will commence at 6:00 p.m. for the non-conference matchup.
