CHICAGO, Ill. – Augustana women's basketball traveled to the Windy City on Saturday for a CCIW matchup against the North Park Vikings, pulling away late in the contest to secure a 66-57 win and move their season record to 7-3 (2-1 CCIW).
With 12 lead changes, Augie and North Park traded blows all afternoon. Augustana trailed exiting the opening half by just four points, with Gabriela Loiz shooting 7-10 and contributing 12 points. North Park benefited from 17 made free throws in the opening two quarters, giving them a 28-24 advantage at the break.
In the third period, Augie shot at a 54 percent clip, with
Macy Beinborn and
Presley Case dumping in three baskets a piece. Augustana was efficient at generating turnovers, securing five of their eight second-half steals in the third frame. The Vikings had their first positive quarter of the game, out-scoring the home team by seven points to take a three-point lead into the final period.
North Park took the lead for the final time in the contest with 8:26 remaining before Augie went on an 11-2 run to pull away for good. The comeback attempt from North Park sent Augustana to the line often in the final frame, with the Vikings converting 7-8 attempts down the stretch to ice the contest.
Augie's leading scorer was Loiz, who followed a season-high 20-point effort on Wednesday with a 19-point performance today against North Park. Loiz shot 9-13 from the field and led all players Saturday on the glass with seven. Elsewhere, Beinborn and Case contributed respective 12 and 13-point efforts, while Matayia Tellis put in 11 points of her own while generating five steals to help Augie win the turnover battle. The Viking defense also held North Park guard Esther Miller, the CCIW's third-leading scorer entering the day, to just four points in 31 minutes.
The Vikings move
to 7-3 and 2-1 in CCIW play on the season following the win. Augie remains away for their final contest of a three-game road stretch when they face Carthage on Saturday, December 17. Start time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. from inside Tarble Arena.
