Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Late run lifts Pioneers over Vikings

ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings men's basketball team dropped a non-conference clash with the visiting UW-Platteville Pioneers on Tuesday, falling by a score of 81-73 from inside the Carver Center.

The Pioneers got off to a fast start, quickly doubling up the Vikings with 10 of the first 15 points before an 8-0 spurt from Augie gave the Vikings their first lead of the contest. The two teams traded baskets for a majority of the first half until the Vikings saw their first two-possession advantage of the game at 23-18. Platteville never saw the lead until a buzzer-beating three-pointer gave them a 34-31 at halftime.

Augustan reclaimed the lead quickly in the second half, hitting consecutive threes out of the gate. Like the first, the two squads traded leads, with neither posting a margin of more than six until less than a minute remaining. With 3:43 left to go, a made free throw by Matt Hawkins put the Vikings up five at 70-65. The Pioneers charged back in the final three minutes, stringing together a 16-3 run to end the game.

The team teams shot at a similar rate throughout the game, with the Pioneers making 49.2 percent of their attempts and the Vikings sitting at an even 50 percent. UW-Platteville connected on two additional three-pointers than the Vikings, knocking down 12 to Augie's 10, while the Vikings hit just 5-12 from the free-throw line.

Augustana was led by Daniel Carr, who notched his fourth double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds. A total of five Vikings hit double figures as Tyler Knuth tallied 13, Chase Larsen 12, and Colton Gillingham and Evan Ambrose each with 12.

With the loss, Augie drops to 1-3 on the season. The team will remain at home for their next outing on Sunday, November 27 when they welcome in the No. 16 ranked Washington-St. Louis Bears. Start time is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
