ROCK ISLAND – The Augustana Vikings women's basketball team got back in the win column on Monday, besting the Colorado College Tigers by a 79-69 score inside the Carver Center.
The Vikings were electric to open the first period, shooting at a 47 percent clip from the field to equal a 28-point effort. Presley Case led the Vikings in the scoring department with eight points, including two three-point makes, in the opening frame. Three-pointers rained in from three others as the Vikings shot just over 55 percent from deep. The Vikings also led the Tigers on the glass by a 12-6 margin in the quarter.
The second period was consistent with the first, seeing scores from five different contributors on their way to a 22-point halftime edge.
Corey Whitlock got going for Augie down low, putting in three of her five attempts while bringing in four boards.
Macy Beinborn and
Kadence Tatum were quietly perfect from the field, shooting 2-2 and 3-3, respectively.
A forgettable third quarter from the Vikings led to an eight-point advantage for the Tigers frame as Augie committed 14 turnovers over the eight-minute span. The momentum from Colorado College had Augustana on their heels into the fourth as well as to a once 24-point lead trimmed down to just four points. Augie stopped an opening 12-0 run from the Tigers with a timely Case three-pointer and the Vikings benefited from nine made free throws in the period to hold onto the 10-point victory.
The Vikings were led in scoring by Beinborn and Case, who dropped points totals of 16 and 15. Case finished the night 5-9 shooting, cashing four makes from beyond the arc. Three Vikings finished with seven or more boards while also boasting four scorers in double-figures.
With the win, the Vikings move to 4-1 and will face Webster in another home affair on Saturday, November 26. Start time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. from inside the Roy J. Carver Center.
