Women's tennis picks up home victory over Elmhurst

ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings women's tennis team move over .500 on the year on Wednesday following a home victory over the Elmhurst Bluejays, winning by a score of 8-1 at the Lower Campus Courts.

The Vikings won all three doubles matches for an early 3-0 lead in the match. Lily Schoeck and Hannah Colbert made quick work of their opponent at the No. 1 spot, winning by a final of 8-1. At No. 2, the duo of Caitlyn Hanulikova and Natasha Gauerke were close behind, also posting an 8-1 score in their favor. Grace Rider and Mia Reese squeaked out an 8-7 victory at No. 3 to make it a clean sweep in doubles.

Augustana took five of the six singles matches to clinch the victory. Hanulikova, Michaela Magee, and Colbert only dropped one game each in their wins at the No. 2-4 slots, while Schoeck cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 victory at the No. 1 position. Maitreyi Shrikhande grabbed the final win of the day for the Vikings, taking the match at No. 6 singles by a score of 7-6, 6-2. The Bluejays' lone win came at No. 5.

"We played well today," said head coach David DeSimone. "I am proud of our No. 3 doubles team for playing a good tiebreaker to get the win. Maitreyi also battled in a tough first set and continued to get better as the match went on. Overall, we saw a lot of the many things we have been working on in practice."

With the win, Augustana improves to 3-2 on the year. The team will remain home for their next match on Friday, October 7 when they host the North Central Cardinals. Start time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
