CHICAGO, Ill. -- Tyler Rivelli scored five times and the Augustana Vikings football team got back in the win column on Saturday as they picked up a 56-34 road victory over the North Park Vikings for their fourth win of the year.
Rivelli notched the game's first touchdown less than 90 seconds in, converting a four-yard run to close out a quick opening drive for the Vikings and give them a 7-0 advantage. Following a defensive stop, it was more of the same for Augustana, grabbing a second touchdown run from Rivelli, this time from three yards out, to make it a 14-0 game just six minutes into the opening quarter.
The 14-0 lead for Augie remained intact through 15 minutes of action, but the team was quick to get back on the scoreboard early on in the second, seeing a 69-yard touchdown run from
Jacob Brooks. After a North Park touchdown, Rivelli added his third score of the day halfway through the second quarter to push the team's lead back out to 21. Brooks and Rivelli each contributed one touchdown on the ground in the final 5:18 of the first half to bring the Vikings' lead to 42-13 entering halftime.
North Park grabbed the first two touchdowns of the second half, cutting the deficit to just 15 before Augie notched their first and only score through the air shortly after. A quick six-play, 72-yard drive resulted in a 19-yard connection from
Cole Bhardwaj to
Jack Schmitz to cushion the Vikings' advantage to 49-27 heading into the final frame.
Five minutes into the fourth quarter, North Park capped off a long 17-play drive that took off over nine minutes of clock to bring the game back to a two-possession differential. After the two teams traded a couple of empty possessions, Augustana secured the game's final touchdown with just over a minute remaining as Rivelli tallied a record-setting touchdown from 43 yards out. His five rushing touchdowns tie a school record for most in the game, joining Joe Thompson in 1974 and Sam Frasco in 2015, who both did it against North Park as well. It is just the fourth time this season that someone has ran for five touchdowns at the NCAA DIII level. Kyle Zick still holds the Augie record for most total touchdowns in a game, tallying six back in 2002 against Elmhurst.
As a team, Augustana racked up a total of 309 yards on the ground and out-gained their Viking counterpart, 480-419. Rivelli ended his day with 159 yards, while Brooks was close behind with 147 yards on just nine carries, good for over 16 yards per attempt. Bhadrwaj finished with 171 yards through the air, while Rivelli also had the team's top receiving effort with 47 yards.
On defense,
Frank Giamarusti had an interception to go with three tackles.
With the win, Augie improves to 4-3 overall and 3-3 in the CCIW. The team will return home for their next contest on Saturday, October 29 when they host the Illinois Wesleyan Titans. Start time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. from inside Lindberg Stadium.
