DUBUQUE, Iowa -- The Augustana Vikings women's volleyball team was victorious over the Dubuque Spartans on Friday, winning on the road in five sets by a final score of 14-25, 25-23, 25-17, 6-25, 15-8.
Following an opening-set win for the Spartans, Augie came back with a closely-fought 25-23 win in set two, evening the match at one win apiece. Neither team led by more than two points until the Vikings broke away from a 15-15 tie with three straight scores. Dubuque charged back to tie and eventually reclaim the lead at 21-20, but Augie used another 3-0 spurt to pull back ahead.
Alexis Richards secured the final two points for the Vikings to help seal the two-point win.
Dubuque doubled up Augustana early with a 6-3 lead in set three, but a 5-0 run from the Vikings put them out in front for good, never trailing the rest of the way. After the Spartans cut the margin back down to one, the Vikings cushioned their advantage to as many as seven before eventually tallying the final three points for the eight-point victory. The home team responded in the fourth set with a dominating 25-6 win to push the match to a fifth and final game.
The Spartans grabbed the first two points of the deciding frame, but were met with four of the next from Augie. The two teams traded points for several rallies, setting up a 9-8 score in favor of the Vikings. From there, the final six points of the set were scored by Augustana, closing out the match with the seven-point victory.
Richards led the offensive attack for the Vikings, finishing with a team-high 14 kills on 39 attempts.
Amelie Baehr-Ross and
Syd Krueger were next with six kills apiece, with Baehr-Ross also posting 33 assists and nine digs.
With the win, Augustana improves to 15-7 overall. The team will be back in action tomorrow with matches against UW-La Crosse and UW-Platteville.
