Men's basketball secures road win over Carroll

The Vikings picked up their second straight win on Saturday

WAUKESHA, Wis. -- The Augustana Vikings men's basketball team picked up a CCIW road victory on Saturday over the Carroll Pioneers, winning by a final score of 72-61 to earn their second consecutive win overall.

It was a fast start for the Vikings, jumping out to a quick 13-2 lead. The Pioneers responded to the early deficit with a 14-3 run to equalize the game before eventually taking the lead into halftime at 35-32. Augustana closed out the first half 14-25 on two-point attempts, but was held to just one make from behind the arc on 11 tries. Carroll hit 42 percent of their shots in the opening 20 minutes to help lead them to the slim margin.

The second half brought a back-and-forth affair for the first ten minutes, but Carroll maintained their small lead throughout that span. With 8:38 to go, Augustana grabbed their first lead of the second, using a 7-0 run fueled by five points and an assist from Matt Hanushewsky. The Pioneers regained the lead once more at 54-53, but the Vikings pulled away for good following a tie-breaking three-pointer from Dan Carr at the 4:30 mark. The made three jump started an 11-2 victory and Augie coasted to the finish line with free throws to earn the 11-point victory.

"This was a really good road win for our young team," said head coach Tom Jessee. "We started and finished the game very well and we were able to fight through some adversity in between."

Carr led the Vikings with another double double, posting 16 points and 11 rebounds in 26 minutes. Luke Johnson was also in double figures with 12 points, while Nicolas Giliberto added 11. Matt Hawkins scored eight of his 10 points in the first half to also crack double digits. As a team, the Vikings hit 45.9 percent of their shots and held the Pioneers to 41.1 percent from the field.

With the win, Augustana improves to 7-5 overall and 2-2 in CCIW play. The team will remain on the road as they gear up for three ranked opponents over their next four games, starting with the No. 9 ranked Wheaton Thunder on Wednesday, January 12. Tip is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. from Wheaton, Ill.
