ROCK ISLAND, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings men's basketball team will look to make it two wins over the Carroll Pioneers this year when they welcome in their conference foe to the Carver Center on Saturday night.
The Vikings are coming off of a narrow defeat on the road to the North Central Cardinals on Wednesday, a game where neither team saw a lead larger than five points. Following a deadlocked score at half, the Cardinals and Vikings went back-and-forth for a majority of the second half until North Central connected on a last-minute three-pointer to stretch a two-point cushion to five. A defensive stop ensued to give the home team the 73-68 victory.
Nate Ortiz had a career-high 21 points to lead Augie on 7-13 shooting.
Luke Johnson and
Matt Hanushewsky both ended with 11 apiece, while
Dan Carr added nine points and 14 rebounds.
Carroll enters Saturday's matchup with a 5-14 record overall and 1-9 mark in the CCIW. They are currently riding a three-game losing streak and fell 94-73 to No. 18 Wheaton in their most recent outing. The Pioneers are just 1-5 on the road this season, with their one victory coming in conference play against North Park. Carroll is averaging just under 68 points per contest this season and is led in scoring by sophomore Ryan Mendoza at 11.2 points per game.
This will be the second meeting of the season for these two teams, with Augie winning the first in Waukesha by a score of 72-61. Carr posted a game-high 16 points to go with 11 rebounds in the win. The Vikings have won seven of the last eight encounters over the Pioneers.
