ROCK ISLAND, Ill. -- Dan Carr scored 19 of his 25 points in the second half and the Augustana Vikings men's basketball team defeated the visiting Millikin Big Blue by a score of 76-64 from inside the Carver Center on Saturday night.
The Vikings trailed just once in the game at 5-4 and grew a first half lead to as many as 13 as they flipped the script from their early-season defeat in Decatur. Augie did not have a player score more than six points in the opening half, but had nine different players tally at least two points as they held a 31-20 advantage after 20 minutes. The Vikings held the Big Blue to just 33 percent shooting and 1-8 from behind the arc to go with 15 turnovers forced.
In the second half, Augustana turned on the offense, outscoring Millikin by a point with 45 of their own in just the second half. Carr concluded the final 20 minutes 6-8 from the field and 2-2 from behind the arc to finish with 25. He also grabbed 11 rebounds in the second half alone to give him a career high 18. Augie led by as many as 19 in the contest and saw Millikin get under 10 points just once in the second half at the two-minute mark. Leading 69-60, the Vikings strung together six consecutive free throws to push it back out to 15, eventually resulting in the 76-64 victory.
"It was a terrific bounce back win coming off a couple of home losses," head coach
Tom Jessee said after the game "Our guys played our best defensive half of basketball in the first half tonight, which propelled us to a great home win that we really needed."
Joining Carr in double figures was
Luke Johnson, who helped lead a balanced attack throughout the lineup with 10 points.
Nate Ortiz and
Nicolas Giliberto both added nine as well. As a team, the Vikings hit 41.5 percent of their shots, but held the Big Blue to their lowest shooting effort of the season at 36 percent. Augie also held a plus-four rebounding margin and forced 20 Millikin turnovers.
With the win, Augustana improves to 9-9 on the season and 4-5 in the CCIW. The team will be back in action on Wednesday, January 26 when they hit the road to take on the North Central Cadinals. Tip is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. from Naperville, Ill.Â
