Two Birkey goals lift women's soccer over Greenville

Augustana dominates Greenville in 3-1 non-conference triumph

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Augustana women's soccer (1-1) put a tally in the win column this afternoon when they defeated the visiting Greenville University Panthers (0-1) by a score of 3-1.

The Vikings struck first in the 14th-minute when Marcela Arreguin scored her first goal of the season after an Alex Dominguez assist. Augustana rode their 1-0 lead into the halftime hiatus.

After the break, Augie continued to charge and netted two more scores to make it 3-0. Savanna Birkey went back-to-back in both the 66th and 67th-minutes. The second of Birkey's goals was assisted by an Anna Bross free kick.

Greenville could not do much to stop the Augustana attack but did cut the Viking advantage to 3-1. Kiera Coleman was assisted by Taylor Howard in the 70th-minute of action for the Panthers' only goal of the game.

The Vikings' offense was running on all cylinders and dominated nearly every facet of the contest. Augie led 20-2 in shots and 13-2 in the shots on goal. Kayla Garcia and Anna Bross had a combined six shots on goal to lead the team.

In goal, Greenville played two keepers. Grace Gehner started the contest and played 65 minutes but was replaced by Carly Wagner due to injury. Gehner made seven saves while Wagner added three. For the Vikings, Janey Castoe went the distance and made one total save.

Augustana will hit the road for their next contest. On Wednesday, Sept. 8, the Vikings will visit Lisle, Ill. to face off against the Benedictine University Eagles.
