Box Score KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Members of the Augustana Vikings women's tennis team competed at the ITA Regional Championships over the weekend in Michigan, battling tough in a highly-competitive field that saw a few wins go in their favor.
In doubles, the duo of
Lily Schoeck and
Caitlyn Hanulikova saw a defeat in their first match on Friday morning, but proceeded to advance to Saturday in the consolation bracket later on in the day. The two moved forward after winning over a pair of teammates from Wooster. A bye then pushed them into the back draw quarterfinals, where they were defeated on Saturday by a score of 8-4 to Denison.
In singles, Schoeck fell in her first match of the weekend to the one of the higher seeded players, but bounced back with a win in the opening round of the consolation bracket to eventually find herself in the quarterfinals on Saturday. She was defeated by North Central's Hannah Hougland in a competitive 6-3, 6-2 match to eliminate her from the tournament.
Lauren Oda also saw some action at the ITA regionals, but dropped her first two matches to prevent her from advancing. Hanulikova also dropped both her two singles matches.
"Playing at the ITA is always a fun, but challenging experience," head coach
David DeSimone said. "With so many high-level players competing, it is a great opportunity for our women to experience competition from across the region. Overall we are capable of playing some amazing tennis and I think we showed that in stretches this weekend."
The Vikings team will head back into team play beginning Sunday, October 3rd when they visit North Central for a conference road matchup. Start time is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. from Naperville.
