WAVERLY, Iowa – The Augustana women's volleyball team (4-11) could not get back on track earlier today at the Wartburg Invitational in Waverly. The Vikings squared off against the host Knights of Wartburg College and Augsburg University in two non-conference matches.
The first match of the day went the way of the hosts in relatively brief fashion. Wartburg made quick work of Augie in the first set, 25-10. Augustana battled back and gave the Knights all they could handle in the second set, but still fell 25-21. Finally, Wartburg slammed the door shut with a dominant 25-12 third set.
Brook Fieldman recorded a team-high eight kills in the first match, as well as one block.
Amelie Baehr-Ross continued her improved play with 10 assists to pace Augie in that category. The highlight of the first match was
Grace Vranicar who made 21 total digs.
The second match of the day began with a bang for Augustana, and it looked like the Vikings might regain some momentum. Augie took the first set in a competitive 25-23 affair. Augsburg did not roll over, though, and rattled off three-straight set wins 25-13, 25-22, and 25-18.
The statistical records for Augustana were much more balanced in the second game. Fieldman and
Emily Schipper had 14 and 11 kills, respectively. Baehr-Ross again assisted ten times, but
Olivia Doak provided 28 sets. Vranicar, Doak, and Schipper recorded a combined 43 digs on defense.
Augustana will look to snap their seven-game losing streak on Wednesday, Sept. 29 when the Vikings travel to Elmhurst for the second CCIW tilt of the season.
