Box Score 2 WAUKESHA, Wis. -- The Augustana Vikings women's tennis team went 1-1 over the weekend after playing a pair of CCIW teams on Saturday and Sunday on the road up in Wisconsin.
September 18 at Carthage (L 5-4)
The Vikings began the weekend in Kenosha against the Firebirds of Carthage in their first road contest of the season. Augie got things going with wins in two of three doubles matches, seeing success at No. 2 from
Lauren Oda and
Grace Rider and at No. 3 from
Michaela Magee and
Mia Reese. Both of those matches were on the board first to give the Vikings a 2-0 lead, but the Firebirds answered with a win at No. 1 to make 2-1 in favor of Augustana heading into singles.
Carthage evened the match up at 2-2 with a win at No. 6 to begin singles play, but reigning CCIW Athlete of the Week
Caitlyn Hanulikova put the Vikings back in front following a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 3. The next two matches mirrored the first couple, with the Firebirds tying the match again before Magee grabbed a win in the No. 2 position. Following the victory from Magee, the Vikings needed just one win to clinch the match, but Carthage responded with wins in the No. 4 and 5 spots to squeak out the one-point win at home.
Augustana dropped to 2-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play following the loss to Carthage.
September 19 at Carroll (W 6-3)
Augie bounced back on Sunday in an early match against the Carroll Pioneers to round out their two-day trip. The Vikings fell behind early in doubles, but grabbed the final two matches at the No. 1 and 3 positions to take a 2-1 advantage heading into singles. After Magee and Reese knotted things up with an 8-3 victory, the tandem of
Lily Schoeck and Hanulikova won in a tiebreaker in the third and final contest of doubles competition.
In singles, the Vikings clinched the match early with three straight wins from the top three spots. Schoeck won her match at No. 1 by a score of 6-3, 6-2, while Magee and Hanulikova were victorious in No. 2 and 3, respectively. Augie earned one more victory to add onto the final score tally with a win at No. 6 from
Nicole Pachecho.
"Our women had a great bounce-back win against Carroll after competing well against Carthage and coming up short," said head coach
David DeSimone. "It certainly was a successful day and a lot to build off of."
The Vikings improve to 3-2 overall and 3-1 in CCIW play. The team will be back in action on Friday, September 24th for a three-day trip to Kalamazoo, Mich. to compete in the ITA Regional Championships.
