Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Day one of Viking Classic ends in two five-set defeats for Augustana women

UW-Platteville and Nebraska Wesleyan play spoiler for invitational hosts

ROCK ISLAND, Ill.  – The 2021 Augustana Viking Classic began with heartbreak for the hosts. Both of the day's matches ended in narrow fifth-set losses at the hand of UW-Platteville and Nebraska Wesleyan University.

The first game of the weekend for the Vikings was a hard-fought battle that was lost in the final set. Augustana started things off against the Pioneers of Wisconsin-Platteville. The visiting squad jumped out to an early 2-0 overall lead, but quickly lost momentum. Augie tied things up before the Pioneers slammed the door to clinch the win.

The first set of the match went into extra time as Platteville outlasted a charging Viking team 26-24. The second set was nearly as high-scoring with a final tally of 25-22. In the third and fourth sets, Augustana looked like a completely different club and outscored the visitors by a total of 50-32. The Vikings even rallied late in the final set, but made a couple key mistakes down the stretch to fall 15-11.

Brook Fieldman and Emily Schipper did significant damage on offense with 16 and 13 kills, respectively. Fieldman, as well as Olivia Doak, also recorded a trio of serving aces. Doak's 39 assists led Augie in that category as well. On defense, Grace Vranicar made 23 total digs, while Fieldman notched 10 for herself.

The Vikings fought through another five-set match in the nightcap, but again fell 3-2. The visiting Prairie Wolves of Nebraska Wesleyan University traded blows with Augie the entire way. NWU jumped out to an early lead with a 25-19 triumph in the first set. Augustana then battled back and took the next two sets 25-20 and 25-21 in competitive fashion. With mere points to score to secure the victory, the Vikings made a handful of costly blunders in the fourth set and allowed the Prairie Wolves to win 27-25. The fifth, and final, set was similar to the rest, but was taken by Nebraska Wesleyan 15-13.

Schipper and Fieldman led the offensive attack for Augie with 18 and 14 respective kills to their credit. Olivia Doak dished out another 42 assists in the final game of the day. Doak and Grace Vranicar also recorded 19 digs apiece, followed by Schipper's 13.

The Vikings will be back in action tomorrow morning at 10:00 A.M. for a match against the Knox Prairie Fire, then for the tournament's conclusion at 2:00 P.M. against Coe College.
