ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Day two of the Viking Classic was more of the same for the Augustana women's volleyball team. The Vikings faced off against the Knox College Prairie Fire and Kohawks of Coe College, and dropped both matches to go 0-4 on the weekend.
The first game of Saturday's competition started fast for Augustana as they jumped out to a 2-0 overall lead over Knox.
Brook Fieldman continued her stellar weekend with an exclamation point kill to reach the two-set advantage. The Prairie Fire did not smolder, however, and quickly regained momentum. Knox won the next two sets to even the match at 2-2. Finally, in the fifth set, Augustana gained and lost a lead. Catessa Durant delivered the final blow with the match-sealing kill.
Fieldman and
Emily Schipper led the Viking offense with 12 kills while
Sydney Krueger added 10 of her own. Schipper, Krueger, and
Jenny Dunder used their vertical advantage on the defensive side of the net with four blocks each. Elsewhere,
Olivia Doak made 29 assists and
Grace Vranicar dug 29 attacks.
The final match of the Viking Classic was much briefer compared to Augie's previous contests. Coe swept the Vikings in three sets 25-14, 25-21, and 25-18. Augustana held onto a lead as large as 10 points in the second set, but could not manage the Kohawks' persistence.
Rachel Galluzzo had a team-high six kills and 10 digs against Coe.
Jenny Dunder also showed positive signs with four blocks.
Augustana women's volleyball will be back in action this Wednesday, Sept. 22 for the CCIW opener. 15
th-ranked Carthage will visit the Carver Center for a 7:00 P.M. match.
