MONMOUTH, Ill. – The Augustana women's volleyball team (4-5) put a three-game losing skid behind them tonight with a 3-0 drubbing of Monmouth College (5-5) on the road.
The Vikings battled Monmouth through a competitive first after trading points for most of the period. Eventually, back-to-back Augie scores on a Monmouth serving error and
Jenny Dunder kill ended the set 25-21.
In the second set, the Fighting Scots got out to an early 9-5 lead before Augustana came back. The Vikings rally was ignited by a kill from
Sydney Krueger, and the visitors rattled off four consecutive points. The Vikings never trailed in the second set and won it 25-17 to extend their overall lead.
Finally, the Augie squad won another heated set in the third but completed the game 25-23. Monmouth knotted the score of the final set 23-23, but two straight attacking errors from Delaney Scheidenhelm and Kaylee Woodard gave the Vikings the boost they needed.
Krueger and
Brook Fieldman led the Vikings' aggressive attack with 17 and 14 kills, respectively. Two Augie players were also key component to the victory with their distribution skills as both
Olivia Doak and
Amelie Baehr-Ross each recorded 20+ assists. Three Augustana players also notched double-digit digs as
Grace Vranicar led the way with 20 followed by Doak and
Emily Schipper with 11.
Augustana women's volleyball will be back in action this weekend at their home invitational event. The Vikings will host four non-conference games from Friday, Sept. 17 to Saturday, Sept. 18 including match-ups with UW-Platteville, Nebraska Wesleyan, Knox, and Coe.
