CARROLL 10, AUGUSTANA 5
The Pioneers rallied with seven runs in the final two innings to win the opener. Trailing 5-3 going to the top of the eighth, they regained the lead with five runs against the Augustana bullpen. Alec Honickel's RBI single to right center tied it and Nick Angus followed with an RBI double to right to put the visitors on top. Justin Baker's two-run pinch single capped the frame.
Mitch Massimo provided some insurance with a two-run homer to left in the top of the ninth and Jake Nitch set the Vikings down in order in the bottom half to close things out.
Carroll took a 3-0 lead after an inning and a half. Augustana starter
Harrison Boushele (Grandview HS, Aurora, Colo.) walked the bases full in the first and Honickel bounced a single through the right side, scoring a pair. The Pioneers added an unearned run in the second.
Brett Buzzelli held the Vikings hitless through five frames, but they scored two in the sixth on
Jaden Dellitt's (Mercer County HS, Aledo, Ill.) two-out, two-run pinch single and took the lead with three in the seventh.
Michael Gattuso (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) scored the tying run on
Matt Helms' (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) RBI fielder's choice and
Alex Simon (Hinsdale Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) tallied the go-ahead run following an error.
Griffen Pschigoda (Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) added an RBI single to make it 5-3 after seven.
Reliever Josh Streu (2-0) got the win for Carroll.
John Hayes (Cherry Creek HS, Greenwood Village, Colo.) suffered his first loss in five decisions this year. Boushele went 5 2/3 innings, allowing three hits and three runs (two earned) with three walks and six strikeouts. Pschigoda had two of Augustana's five hits and Helms scored twice.
AUGUSTANA 7, CARROLL 4
The hosts scored in each of their last three at-bats to come from behind and win game two.
Pschigoda's fourth-inning sacrifice fly plated
Mitchell Owens (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) with the game's first run, but the Pioneers got to
Alec Michaelson (Willowbrook HS, Lombard, Ill.) for three in the top of the fifth. Brad Vosters' two-run single was the big hit. The inning could have been bigger, but
Alec McGinnis (Normal West HS, Normal, Ill.) thwarted a double steal attempt by cutting the lead runner down at the plate.
Brett Benedetti (Cherry Creek HS, Greenwood Village, Colo.) scored Owens with a sacrifice fly in the sixth to get the Vikings to within 3-2 and they took the lead with four runs in the seventh.
Zachary Vrbancic (Stagg HS, Palos Hills, Ill.) struck out on a ball in the dirt leading off, but raced all the way to third when the catcher's throw ended up in the Carroll bullpen.
Sam Cregan's (Air Academy, Colorado Springs, Colo.) bunt single drove in the tying run. The go-ahead run scored when
Matt Ozanic (East Leyden HS, Franklin Park, Ill.) was hit with the bases loaded and Benedetti's two-run single added some insurance.
Ozanic doubled in Cregan in the bottom of the eighth to make it 7-3. Hayes relieved Michaelson to start the ninth and finished things off despite giving up a run.
Michaelson scattered 10 hits and allowed three runs in eight innings. He walked one and fanned three and improved to 7-0 on the year. Carroll starter Curtis Sheahan (4-3) went six innings and took the loss.
Owens finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Benedetti was 2-for-3 with three knocked in and Ozanic 2-for-4 with two RBI. Despite not entering the game until the seventh inning, Cregan scored twice and drove in a run.
