Vikings drop season finale at North Central

NAPERVILLE, Ill. – North Central's Jessica Deetjen had five goals and three assists Thursday to lead North Central to a 17-10 win over Augustana in the teams' season finale at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium. The Vikings close the 2021 season with a record of 5-10, while the Cardinals finish 3-6.

Berit Vandenbroucke scored in the first minute and Deetjen had three goals as the hosts took a 6-2 lead after 21 minutes. Both of Augustana's scores came from senior Sandra Pelechaty (Taft HS, Chicago, Ill.). Classmate Margaret Cecilio (Archbishop Mitty HS, San Jose, Calif.) assisted on the second.

After Sydney Rector (Fishers HS, Fishers, Ind.) and Annabelle Steiner traded goals to make it 7-3 Cardinals, there was a flurry of scoring in the final two minutes of the half. Pielechaty assisted on a pair of Kathryn Hettiger (Carmel HS, Carmel, Ind.) goals and Deetjen and Vandenbroucke answered for the hosts to make it 9-5 at the break.

Augustana cut the deficit to three twice in the second half. Cassidy Petrie (Naperville North HS, Naperville, Ill.) and Cecilio sandwiched goals around one by North Central's Abbey Triebe in the first eight minutes to make it 10-7.

Grace Steiner and Vandenbroucke scored to extend the margin to 12-7 with 20 minutes to play before the Vikings scored three of the next four. Hettiger scored twice and Rector once. Hettiger's fourth goal of the game got Augustana to within 13-10 before the Cardinals scored four times in the last five minutes to account for the final.

Hettiger finished with four goals and Pielechaty had two goals and five assists. Senior Courtney Veitch (Lake Zurich HS, Hawthorn Woods, Ill.) made 12 saves in goal.
