Ohrtmann’s big day helps Vikings split at Carroll

WAUKESHA, Wis. — Sydney Ohrtmann (Freeport HS, Rockford, Ill.) went 4-for-4 with four RBI Sunday to lead Augustana to a 5-3 win over Carroll in the teams' doubleheader opener at Kilgour Field. The Pioneers came back to win the nightcap 11-6. The Vikings moved to 7-23 on the year and 4-18 in the CCIW and the hosts are now 18-16 and 14-12, respectively. Coach Kris Kistler's club is scheduled to play a twin bill versus Carthage in Kenosha, Wisconsin on Monday, April 26.

AUGUSTANA 5, CARROLL 3

After Augustana left the bases loaded in the top of the second, Carroll took a 1-0 lead against Viking starter Cecelia Peine (Holt HS, Wentzville, Mo.) in the bottom half. Lauren Harshbarger led off with a single to center and scored one out later on a Claudia Spencer double to right.

Augustana answered with four runs off Pioneer ace Amanda Osterhus in the top of the third. Tristan Bautista (United Township HS,, East Moline, Ill.) singled to right with one out. Consecutive walks to Erin Smith (Columbine HS, Highlands Ranch, Colo.), Jannae Mehaffey (Cherry Creek HS, Englewood, Colo.) and Nadia Ranieri (Riverside-Brookfield HS, North Riverside, Ill.) forced in Bautista with the tying run and Ohrtmann followed with a bases-clearing triple to left to make it 4-1.

Smith relieved Peine to start the third and held Carroll until the fifth, when an error and two singles loaded the bases with one out. Bridget Rath's fielder's choice drove in a run and another scored on a wild pitch, as the Pioneers trimmed their deficit to 4-3.

Breanna Roberts, who came on for Osterhus in the fourth, blanked the guests until the seventh. Mehaffey was hit by a pitch leading off and moved to second on a Ranieri sacrifice. She advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on Ohrtmann's fourth straight hit, a double down the left field line.

Amanda Page (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) pitched around a two-out error in the bottom of the seventh to complete her second scoreless frame and earn her first save of the season.

Peine (1-7) was credited with the win, with Osterhus (10-6) taking the loss. Bautista complimented Ohrtmann's big game with a pair of hits and Mehaffey scored twice.

CARROLL 11, AUGUSTANA 6

Kaylee Learman staked Carroll to a lead with a two-run homer off Ranieri in the top of the first and the Pioneers added four runs in the third. Learman and Allyssa Demma had RBI singles and Rachel Piontek a run-scoring double as the advantage was extended to 6-0.

The Vikings began chipping away against Grace Bradley in the bottom of the third. Claudia Buchholz (Kettle Moraine HS, Waukesha, Wis.) reached on an error leading off. Ashley Dehmlow (McHenry West HS, Spring Grove, Ill.) walked and Molly Wrenn (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) singled to left to load the bases. Buchholz scored on an Olivia Blood (Riverside-Brookfield HS, North Riverside, Ill.) ground out and Dehmlow and Wrenn both scored on a fielder's choice grounder by Smith as Augustana cut the deficit in half.

Mehaffey's two-out RBI single in the fifth plated Blood to make it 6-4, but Spencer homered leading off the sixth and Carroll added four in the top of the seventh on two-run singles by Spencer and Maria Mundt.

Ohrtmann had an RBI double as the Vikings scored two in the bottom of the seventh, but Osterhus finished off a two-inning relief stint to earn the save.

Bradley improved to 7-3 with the win. Ranieri (4-6) went 2 1/3 innings and took the loss. Wrenn had two of Augustana's eight hits.
