Augustana rolls to 51-14 win at North Park in season finale

ROCK ISLAND, Ill.—Jacob Brooks (Yorkville, HS, Plano, Ill.) rushed for 164 yards and Alek Jacobs (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) threw four touchdown passes Friday, as Augustana wrapped up its truncated 2020 football season with a 51-14 win at North Park. Coach Steve Bell's squad finished 1-2 on the season and in the CCIW, while the hosts moved to 1-3 overall and in the league.

After forcing a North Park punt on the opening possession of the game, Augustana took a 3-0 lead when Owen Ennis (Evanston HS, Evanston, Ill.) finished off a nine-play, 60-yard drive with a 24-yard field goal. NPU had a chance to tie early in the second quarter, but Fletcher Martin's 34-yard field goal try came up short.

Augustana extended its lead midway through the second quarter. Brooks opened a seven-play, 44-yard drive with three straight carries for 19 yards and Jacobs eventually finished it off with a 21-yard scoring strike to freshman Casey Erickson (Dunlap HS, Dunlap, Ill.). Ennis' point-after made it 10-0.

Brandon Vinson got free behind the Augustana secondary and hauled in a 42-yard touchdown pass from Grant Borsch, cutting NPU's deficit, after Martin's PAT, to 10-7, but the visitors answered with a 67-yard, seven-play scoring drive. Jacobs had a 46-yard pass completion to Mike Riley (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) and capped the march with a two-yard touchdown run with 30 seconds left in the half. Ennis' kick gave Bell's bunch a 17-7 advantage at the break.

Augustana stretched the margin to 23-7 with a touchdown on the first possession of the second half. Jacobs connected with Max Uranich (La Salle-Peru HS, La Salle, Ill.) on completions of 18 and 31 yards, with the second going for the score. The extra point attempt failed.

Broderick Blackford's (Peoria Notre Dame HS, Peoria, Ill.) interception of Borsch at midfield set up Augustana's next score. Brooks carried on all three plays. After being stopped for no gain, he broke off a 13-yard run and then got loose on a 28-yard scoring burst that made it 30-7.

Another interception, this one by Zach Stewart (Crown Point HS, Crown Point, Ind.) in his own end zone, led to a touchdown early in the fourth quarter that extended the lead to 37-7. Brooks' 50-yard run started a six-play, 80-yard drive and Jacobs finished it, hitting Austin Ioerger (Metamora HS, Metamora, Ill.) with an 11-yard touchdown pass.

North Park went 74 yards in 13 plays, with Borsch hitting Micah Lowe for five yards and a touchdown, but Augustana closed out the evening's scoring with a five-yard Jacobs-to-Sam Jones (Plainfield North HS, Plainfield, Ill.) touchdown pass and an 11-yard TD run by Ioerger. The latter was set up when freshman Brian Pritt (Notre Dame HS, Chicago, Ill.) sacked Borsch, causing a fumble that James Thorp (Knoxville HS, Knoxville, Ill.) recovered at the NPU 20.

Brooks' 164 yards came on 20 carries. Jacobs completed 10 of 14 passes for 152 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions. Only Ken Anderson (1968) and Butch Necastro (1975) have ever thrown more touchdown passes in a game for the Vikings. Riley had two catches for 53 yards.

Defensively, Tim Swaney (Anderson HS, Cincinnati, Ohio) logged 13 tackles, including two for loss. Stewart had eight solo tackles among his nine stops and Pritt finished with eight tackles, two sacks and a pair of forced fumbles. Augustana limited its hosts to 52 rushing yards on 34 carries.
