CHICAGO, Ill. – Augustana suffered a pair of one-run setbacks Sunday afternoon at North Park. Coach
Kris Kistler's club fell 2-1 and 3-2 and dropped to 3-7 on the season and 0-2 in the CCIW, while NPU improved to 7-1 overall and 3-1 in the conference. Kistler's bunch is scheduled to play a 1:00 p.m. twin bill at Wheaton on Saturday, March 27.
NORTH PARK 2, AUGUSTANA 1
Starters
Ashley Dehmlow (McHenry West HS, Spring Grove, Ill.) and Alyssa Malicki matched goose eggs in the first two frames before Augustana benefitted from a pair of North Park miscues to plate a run in the top of the third.
Josie Smith (St. Francis HS, Wheaton, Ill.) reached on an error leading off, stole second and moved to third on a
Sydney Ohrtmann (Freeport HS, Rockford, Ill.) single. Smith scored when Dehmlow reached on another NPU gaffe.
The hosts got their two runs off Dehmlow in the bottom of the third. Ellie Manderfeld led off with a bunt single, moved to second on a boot and scored on Caitlyn Webb's single. Alyssa Aragon then drew a walk and later scored on another Augustana error to make it 2-1.
Erin Smith (Columbine HS, Highlands Ranch, Colo.) came on and threw three perfect innings in relief, but Augustana couldn't get to Malicki.
Nadia Ranieri (Riverside-Brookfield HS, North Riverside, Ill.) had a one-out double in the top of the seventh, but Malicki (3-1) left her and another runner stranded to finish off the complete game win. The North Park starter scattered six hits and fanned eight.
Dehmlow (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing just one earned run in three innings of work. Ranieri had two hits.
NORTH PARK 3, AUGUSTANA 2
It was Rachel Feazelle with the complete game win for NPU in the nightcap.
Each team plated a run in the first. Augustana starter
Cecelia Peine (Holt HS, Wentzville, Mo.) gave up a bunt single and a walk to the first two batters of the game. Ohrtmann cut down a runner at the plate on a Feazelle single, but Malicki followed with a hit that plated Webb with the game's first run. It was also the first run surrendered by Peine in 17 innings of work this year.
Kistler's crew tied it in the bottom of the first. Ohrtmann was hit by a pitch with one out, moved to third on a Dehmlow single and scored on
Erin Smith's sacrifice fly to left.
Brigid Early gave North Park a 2-1 lead with a fourth-inning RBI single and Feazelle helped her own cause, making it 3-1 with an RBI double in the fifth.
In the bottom of the fifth, Dehmlow doubled in Ranieri to cut the deficit to 3-2, but Feazelle coaxed an inning-ending comebacker from
Erin Smith to leave two runners stranded.
Josie Smith singled and Ranieri drew a walk with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but Feazelle induced fielder's choice grounders from the next two batters to close things out the win.
Feazelle moved to 4-0 on the season. She allowed six hits and walked three with one strikeout. Peine (0-1) gave up six hits and two runs with a walk and two strikeouts in four frames. Ranieri threw the final three, allowing three hits and a run.
Dehmlow,
Kaitlin Rusin (Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) and
Josie Smith each had two hits for Augustana.
