NAPERVILLE, Ill. – A pair of Augustana players collected honors today when the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin announced its 2020-21 all-conference team. Sophomore
Daniel Carr (Regis Jesuit HS, Highlands Ranch, Colo.) was a first team selection and classmate
Carter Duwa (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) was named to the second team. In addition, Duwa was named the league's Freshman of the Year. He was eligible for the award due to missing all of 2019-20 with a shoulder injury.
The 6' 8", 235-pound Carr averaged team highs of 17.7 points and 10.8 rebounds per game this year, becoming just the sixth Viking—and the first since Bruce Hamming in 1974-75—to average a double-double. He scored in double figures in all 12 contests, snared at least eight rebounds in every game and recorded nine double-doubles, including a streak of eight in a row. He also led Augustana in free throw percentage (.855—tops in the CCIW) and blocked shots (12) and shot .389 (21-54) from three-point range.
Carr is just the fourth Viking to earn first team All-CCIW honors as a sophomore, joining John Laing (1971), Drew Carstens (2002) and Chrishawn Orange (2017).
Duwa was Augustana's second-leading scorer this year with an average of 16.3 points per game—a mark that bettered Kevin Skillett's previous freshman record of 16.0 set in 1990-91. The 6', 165-pound guard hit a team-high 27 three-pointers, converting at a .397 rate, and shot .781 from the free throw line. He had the top three scoring games for Coach
Steve Schafer's squad this year, dropping 29, 26 and 25 in wins over Millikin, Carthage and North Park, respectively.
Duwa becomes the second Viking to earn the league's Freshman of the Year award, joining
Ben Ryan, who was its first-ever winner in 2013. He's also just the fifth freshman in program history named to the All-CCIW team, joining Ryan (2013), Carstens (2001), Skillett (1991) and Shane Price (1979).
