ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Carter Duwa (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa),
Luke Johnson (Longmont HS, Longmont, Colo.) and
Daniel Carr (Regis Jesuit HS, Highlands Ranch, Colo.) combined for 72 points Friday afternoon to lead Augustana to a 98-82 victory over Millikin at Carver Center. Coach
Steve Schafer's Vikings won their second straight to improve to 2-2 overall and in the CCIW. The Big Blue fell to 0-4 on the year and in the league.
Millikin's Calvin Fisher put his team on top 2-0 with a pair of free throws in the opening minute, but Johnson answered with a three-pointer from the right wing and Augustana would lead the rest of the way. A trey from Duwa, another from Johnson and two conventional Duwa field goals stretched the advantage to 13-2 five minutes in.
A Demarcus Bond three-pointer at 12:08 of the first half pulled the visitors to with six (20-14), but Johnson responded with a triple and Carr got on the board with a trey and a deuce to push the margin back to double digits.
Another Big Blue push trimmed the deficit to 34-29 at the 4:50 mark before layups by
Justin Bottorff (Quincy Notre Dame HS, Quincy, Ill.) and
Nate Ortiz (St. Charles East HS, St. Charles, Ill.), along with an Ortiz three-pointer, made it 41-29 Vikings three minutes before halftime. The hosts eventually took a 45-31 lead to the locker room, matching their largest of the half.
Duwa and Johnson picked up right where they left off in the second stanza, with each hitting from beyond the arc in the first 2½ minutes. Carr added five points in the first four minutes of the period. His free throw with 16:09 to play extended the advantage to 20 (56-36) for the first time.
Matt Hanushewsky's (Hersey HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) trey with 8:39 remaining gave Schafer's club its biggest lead of the afternoon at 77-54 and Johnson's fifth of the day, at 6:08, matched that 23-point margin.
Millikin eventually pulled to within 90-78 on a Fisher three-pointer just inside two minutes, but two Carr free throws stemmed the tide before Schafer cleared his bench.
Duwa finished with a game-high 29 points, hitting 11 of 17 from the field and four of 10 from long range. Johnson hit eight of nine from the floor, including all five of his attempts from beyond the arc, and finished with 22. Carr tallied 21 and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds. Fisher scored 26 and Scott Gowan 20 for the Big Blue.
Augustana finished 35 of 60 (.583) from the field, 13 of 30 (.433) from three-point range and 15 of 19 (.789) from the foul line. Millikin shot .464 (25-56) from the floor, .353 (6-17) from deep and .750 (24-32) at the free throw line. The Big Blue led 32-28 on the boards and committed 12 turnovers, while the Vikings coughed it up just eight times.
The two teams get right back at it on Saturday, February 6. Squaring off in Decatur, Illinois with tipoff scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
