Men's basketball steps out of conference to face Whitewater

The Vikings will visit the Warhawks on Wednesday night

WHITEWATER, Wis. -- The Augustana Vikings men's basketball team will take a breather from conference play on Wednesday, December 21 when they hit the road to face the UW-Whitewater Warhawks in a non-conference clash.

Augustana enters Wednesday's matchup coming off a 60-58 defeat to first-place North Park at home. The Vikings jumped out to a 24-2 lead over the visitors, but North Park charged back to cut the deficit in half before break. A late 14-0 run capped off by a game-winning layup with five seconds left gave North Park the two-point victory. Luke Johnson led Augustana with 20 points in the contest, while Dan Carr had 12 points and 16 rebounds.
 
Whitewater currently sits at 7-3 overall on the season with a 2-0 conference record. The team most recently had their five-game winning streak snapped in a five-point road loss to Ripon. Derek Gray led the Warhawks with 19 points and is averaging a team-best 16.6 points per game this season. Whitewater and Augustana have one common opponent so far this year in UW-Stevens Point. The Warhawks defeated the Pointers back on December 1 by a score of 83-70. Whitewater is 4-1 at home this season with a point differential of +98 from inside Kachel Gymnasium. The team is averaging 87.2 points per outing this year with a scoring margin of 13.8 points.

Augustana leads the all-time series between the two 5-4, including wins in the last four meetings. The most recent matchup came during the 2019-20 season which resulted in a 86-69 home victory for the Vikings. Their last encounter in Whitewater was in 2017, a two-point victory for Augustana.
