STEVENS POINT, Wis. -- The Augustana Vikings men's basketball team will continue their non-conference slate on Sunday, November 28 as they gear up for a road contest against the UW-Stevens Point Pointers.
The Vikings are coming off a short one-game home stand in which they defeated the Illinois College Blueboys on Tuesday by a score of 64-61.
Luke Johnson scored 12 of his 17 points in the first half and closed out the game with two made free throws in the final seconds to stretch the final margin to three points.
Dan Carr grabbed his fourth double double of the season with 16 points and 14 rebounds. The senior hit just four shots, but was 8-12 from the line and 5-6 in the second half alone.
Matt Hanushewsky tallied a season-high 10 points in 18 minutes, including a timely and-one layup to break a 54-54 tie late in the game. As a team, the Blueboys out-shot the Vikings 41.7 to 37.3 percent, but Augustana ended the contest with nine more made free throws than the visitors.
UW-Stevens Point enters the weekend with a 1-2 record overall and will take on Lake Forest on Saturday before hosting Augie on Sunday. The team defeated Edgewood 65-63 in their most recent outing after dropping their first two games to St. Olaf and Bethel (Minn.). Against the Eagles of Edgewood, Garrett Nelson hit two free throws with five seconds remaining to lift the Pointers to the win. Nelson led the team with 17 points and is averaging just over 16 points per contest this year.
Sunday's meeting will be the 11th all-time between the two, with Augie currently holding a 6-4 series lead. The Vikings have won five straight over the Pointers, with the most recent matchup coming in 2019, a 68-60 Augustana victory on the road. Outside of the 2020-21 abbreviated slate, this will be the sixth consecutive season they have met. UW-Stevens Point's last win over Augustana came in the 2014-15 NCAA National Championship game, with the Pointers taking that by a score of 70-54.
