Balanced attack leads Vikings to road win over Scots

A total of 11 different players scored in Augie's 72-66 win over Alma

ALMA, Mich. -- The Augustana Vikings men's basketball team picked up their first road win of the season on Saturday, capping off their trip to Michigan with a 72-66 victory over the Alma Scots.

It was a back and forth opening 20 minutes as the game saw seven lead changes after the Scots held the initial advantage for the first ten minutes of play. Each team saw a lead grow as large as five points and the Vikings closed the half on a 5-0 run to take a slim 34-33 margin into halftime. Both Augie and Alma hovered around the 40 percent mark shooting the ball, with the Vikings connecting on 50 percent (6-12) of their three-point attempts. The Scots posted a slight advantage overall from the field, but were just 4-13 from behind the arc in the opening 20 minutes.

Alma regained the lead early in the second on two quick made jumpers, but Augustana charged back with a mini 6-0 spurt to turn a three-point deficit around in their favor. The Vikings never trailed the rest of the way, growing the differential to as many as 13 points on three separate occasions. The Scots capitalized on some late missed free throws by Augie to claw back into the game, but it was too little, too late as the Vikings held on for the six-point victory. Augustana closed out the second half with another 40 percent shooting effort and held Alma to just 1-10 from behind the three-point line throughout the final 20 minutes.

A total of 11 different Vikings scored, led by Dan Carr, who was the only member to hit double figures with 19 points. Carr battled foul trouble in the first half, playing just six minutes and tallying one made field goal, but scored 16 in the second half to help fuel the team. Nate Ortiz and Chase Larsen were next in line with nine points apiece, while Luke Johnson and Nicolas Giliberto added eight. Everyone who entered the game for Augustana had at least one made basket.

"This was a very important win as our team continues to develop," said head coach Tom Jessee. " I am so proud of our players and staff to bounce back and get our first road win. Our staff provided a terrific game plan with a short turnaround and our players really did a great job executing it. We were able to get contributions from everyone that played."

With the win, Augie improves to 3-2 on the season. The team will continue their non-conference slate on Tuesday, November 23 when they return home to host Illinois College. Tip is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. from the Carver Center.
