Warhawks’ defense too much for Augustana, Vikings fall 65-53

Simmer posts double-double as Augie's late charge was not enough

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The 18th-ranked UW-Whitewater Warhawks (4-0) utilized their length and size in a 65-53 defeat at Augustana (3-1) this evening.

The Warhawks jumped out to an early 15-10 lead after the first quarter, but Augustana displayed plenty of effort. Both teams' offensive output was increased in the second period, but UWW took a 38-27 advantage into halftime.

Whitewater exploded out of the halftime break and shut down Augie in the third quarter. The Vikings managed just nine total points in the period. Finally, in the fourth, Augustana's attack found some momentum, but time was not on the Vikings' side. Augie outscored the Warhawks 17-12 in the final period. Three straight transition buckets for Hannah Simmer trimmed the lead to 11. The Vikings could not climb any closer, though, and Whitewater remained unbeaten.

Simmer and Macy Beinborn led the Vikings in scoring with 11 points apiece. Simmer also snagged a game-high 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Lauren Hall again narrowly missed a double-double of her own with nine points and eight boards.

UW-Whitewater had three players in double figures. Aleah Grundahl poured in 27 to lead all scorers while Maggie Trautsch had 14 and Rebekah Schumacher recorded 10. The Warhawks' defense caused fits for Augustana all night, and proved to be the primary difference maker. UWW forced 28 Viking turnovers while committing just 14 of their own, and also blocked seven shots.

Tonight's loss was the first of the season for Augustana as their record now sits at 3-1. The Vikings will hit the road for their next two contests with two games in Springfield, Ohio against Anderson on Saturday, Nov. 20 and Wittenberg on Sunday, Nov. 21.
