ROCK ISLAND, Ill -- The Augustana Vikings men's basketball team will remain home on Tuesday, November 16 when they welcome in the St. Mary's (Minn.) Cardinals for the second of two straight games inside the Carver Center.
The Vikings are coming off an 80-64 home victory over the No. 16 ranked Dubuque Spartans last Friday to improve their record to 1-1 on the young season. Dubuque never saw the deficit dip below eight in the second half and Augie was able to build on to their lead late in the game, hitting 8-8 free throws in the final four minutes. Free throws were a major difference in the win as the Vikings connected on 18-21 from the charity stripe. The Spartans finished 15-28.
Luke Johnson ended his night with a 7-8 mark from the line and shot 5-9 from the field on his way to a 20-point outing. He also added six rebounds and four assists.
Dan Carr was next in line scoring the ball, tallying 16 points and nine rebounds, while
Carter Duwa added 15 in his season debut. Augustana made four more baskets than the visitors despite attempting ten fewer shots.
St. Mary's will take on Augustana in their first game of the 2021-22 season. The team was defeated by Winona State in an exhibition contest earlier this month, followed by their season opener getting postponed. The Cardinals ended last season with a 6-2 mark and finished 14-13 in their last full season back in 2019. St. Mary's is currently receiving votes in the
d3hoops top 25 poll.
This will be just the second meeting ever between the two programs, with the first and only coming back in the 1938-39 season. The game resulted in a 46-42 victory for the Cardinals. St. Mary's is 2-2 versus the CCIW in the last 10 years.
Tip is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
