ELMHURST, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings women's tennis team notched another conference win on Friday, defeating the Elmhurst Bluejays on the road by a score of 9-0. The win for the Vikings is the 34th consecutive victory over the Bluejays, never having lost to them in their series history.
The Vikings No. 3 duo of
Mia Reese and
Michaela Magee snagged the first point of the day for Augie following an 8-3 victory to start of doubles play.
Lily Schoeck and
Caitlyn Hanulikova earned an 8-2 win at the top spot, followed by an 8-3 triumph for
Grace Rider and
Lauren Oda at the No. 2 position to give Augustana the 3-0 advantage heading into singles.
Augie saw a pair of flawless matches at the top three spots, with Schoeck and Magee winning 6-0, 6-0 over their opponents at No. 1 and 2 singles to clinch the match for the Vikings. Hanulikova nearly mirrored her teammates at the No. 3 position, taking her match with a final of 6-1, 6-0. Oda also enjoyed a perfect set in her at No. 4, defeating her counterpart 6-0, 6-4. The other two matches at the fifth and sixth positions went to a third and deciding set, but Reese and
Nicole Pacheco held on to make it a 9-0 victory for the Vikings.
"It was a great team win for us and one that we are hoping to build on the rest of this fall," head coach David DeSimone said. "We had a strong showing in doubles, taking all three decisively. We then got two quick wins from Michaela and Lily to clinch the meet."
With the win, Augie improves to 4-3 overall and 4-2 in conference play. The team will stay on the road for their next match against Wheaton on Saturday, October 9th. The Vikings currently sit one game behind the Thunder for second place in the CCIW.
