Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Vikings erase 2-0 deficit to beat Dubuque in thrilling comeback

Augie women survive early mistakes to steal five-set victory

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Augustana women's volleyball (6-18, 0-5)) hosted the University of Dubuque Spartans (8-15, 1-4) for a non-conference match earlier tonight.

Dubuque began the night on a roll with an early 6-1 lead in the first set. The Vikings showed some signs of life and cut the Spartan advantage to 8-4 before UD went on another run and forced a timeout at 11-4. Augustana refused to quit in the period though and narrowed the Dubuque lead to as few as four points. The Spartan attack was just too consistent ass UD took the first set 25-21.

The second set started in similar fashion as Dubuque opened with a 4-0 lead. Augie fought back and worked the gap down to two points. Ashlee Adler then went on a streak of five straight serves, including two aces, to widen the margin again. The Vikings again battled and trimmed the lead back to four points on an Emily Schipper service streak. Augie stayed within striking distance for much of the second set but could not take the next step. UD won the frame 25-18.

The Vikings began the third set with improved energy and jumped out to a 5-3 lead. The Vikings worked their way up to a 13-9 advantage before Dubuque woke up. The Spartans roared back to knot the set at 13 apiece. Augie then worked their way out in front, but a furious rally by UD provided a scare late in the period. A block by Jenny Dunder and Jaden Julius ended the third set in favor of Augustana, 25-21.

The fourth set was another competitive period with early traded scores and leads. Dubuque eventually jumped out in front 8-5. After battling back, two consecutive Dunder kills gave Augustana a narrow lead. The competition peaked at a 22-all tie before the Vikings scored a flurry of points and won the set 25-23.

Augustana started the final set on fire and leapt out to a 4-0 lead to force a Dubuque timeout. UD regained some stability but could not handle Augustana's furious charge. Finally, an attack error ended the match and sealed the Vikings' comeback victory.

Schipper led the team with 24 kills, followed by Caroline Hurst with 11. Grace Vranicar posted a match-best 33 digs followed by Olivia Doak with 19, Schipper with 17, and Evey Gervase with 10. Doak also led the Vikings with 25 assists.

Augustana will be back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 20 when Carroll visits the Carver Center for the final home CCIW match of the season.
