Vikings welcome in Bears to begin two-game homestand

Augustana will face Washington University in St. Louis for the first of two straight home games

10/13/2021 3:17:00 PM

The Vikings seek to bounce back after falling to No. 5 ranked Wheaton last weekend on the road by a score of 45-0. The Thunder defense caused problems for the Vikings, especially the front seven as they held Augie to just 15 total rushing yards for the game. Jason GrimesĀ received the start at quarterback for Augustana, but it was Cole Bhardwaj who led the team with 114 yards through the air. Tizoc CovarrubiasĀ was the top catcher with 33 yards on one reception. Nick Harper and Brody Blackford led the Augie defense with eight tackles apiece. The Vikings held a plus-five minute margin in time of possession. The Thunder out-gained the Vikings 498-145.

Washington enters Saturday's matchup with a 3-2 record overall and a 3-1 mark in CCIW play. The team has won three of its last four games after falling in their opener to the University of Chicago. The Bears have defeated North Park, Elmhurst, and Illinois Wesleyan thus far, with their lone conference defeat coming at the hands of Wheaton by a score of 40-10. Saturday's game at Augustana will be the first conference road contest for the Bears. Quarterback Matt Rush is coming off a 19-29 performance with 265 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions in their most recent win over Illinois Wesleyan. The balanced offensive attack for the Bears is also led by running back,Ā Hamid Bullie, who had over 100 yards rushing in their last game as well. The Bears are averaging 428.5 yards per contest.

Head coach Steve Bell says the team is looking forward to returning home after a rough one last week against a tough Wheaton team and is expecting a terrific game from both squads this Saturday.

"We definitely took our lumps last Saturday againstĀ an extremely good football team, but looking forward to being at home again thisĀ weekend," Bell said.Ā "We are going up against aĀ very well-coached WashU team that is very physical on defense and explosive on offense."Ā Ā

Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m.
