CCIWJackSwartzspring2020

NAPERVILLE, Ill. - Augustana has announced its Academic All-Conference selections and Jack Swartz Award recipients for the abbreviated 2020 spring sports season. 108 Viking student athletes earned Academic All-Conference recognition and senior Jill Humecke (Wheaton North HS, Wheaton, Ill.) and junior John Hayes (Cherry Creek HS, Greenwood Village, Colo.) were chosen as the Vikings' Jack Swartz Award winners.

The Jack Swartz Award is given to one male and one female athlete at the end of each athletic season. The honor is given by the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin and each of the nine schools in the league are allowed to pick their own representatives. The only requirement is that the winners must earn a varsity letter in his/her sport and have a grade point average of at least 3.50. The award is named after the late Jack Swartz, who served as the Commissioner of the CCIW until his death in 1998.

Humecke was a repeat selection after being Augustana's female Jack Swartz recipient for the winter season as well. The outdoor track & field season was halted before it could get underway due to fears over COVID-19. The Viking baseball season lasted just six games before the plug was pulled. Hayes, a right-handed reliever, saw action in three contests and recorded one save.

Humecke ran a 5:08.59 to claim this year's CCIW title in the mile. That time was the fourth-fastest personal best in program history. She also won the mile at Illinois Wesleyan's Titan Open and Grinnell's Darren Young Invitational and recorded Augustana season bests at 600 (1:43.07) and 800 (2:20.79) meters. She qualified for the 2020 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships in the mile, but unfortunately, virus concerns cancelled the meet and denied her the opportunity to compete. She also had an outstanding cross country season in the fall, finishing ninth at the CCIW Championships at Saukie Golf Course and earning All-Midwest honors with a 24th-place performance at the NCAA Midwest Regional in Winneconne, Wisconsin.

The daughter of Jennifer and Bill Humecke of Wheaton, Illinois, Jill carries a 3.74 grade point average with majors in environmental studies and geography. An 11-time dean's list and Academic All-Conference honoree, she was a winner of the geography department's Senior Research Award and has served internships with Enviro-Mark Solutions in Auckland, New Zealand and with the Upper Mississippi Center for Sustainable Communities.

Hayes' save this spring was the ninth of his career, tying him for fourth-most in program history. He's currently four away from Teddy Grothe's career record of 13, set from 2000-03. Hayes, who led the CCIW in appearances as both a freshman and sophomore, was named the Vikings' Outstanding Pitcher in 2019 after going 5-2 with a 1.89 ERA and eight saves. His sophomore season also included second team All-CCIW and third team ABCA/Rawlings All-Central Region honors.

John, who received Academic All-Conference recognition for the third year in a row, is the son of Susan Sheetz of Greenwood Village, Colorado and James Hayes of Denver, Colorado. He's an accounting and business finance major who sports a GPA of 3.83. He served an audit internship with the John Deere Seeding Group in Moline, Illinois in 2019.
