Cabrini in Winter Haven, Florida.
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Cabrini pitchers scattered eight hits Sunday morning as the Cavaliers handed Augustana a 3-1 setback at Chain of Lakes Stadium. The Vikings fell to 1-2 on the season, while Cabrini improved to 2-0.
Starters
Matt Hoban (Monarch HS, Westminster, Colo.) and Jonathan Baker put up goose eggs through two innings before Augustana got to Baker for a run in the top of the third. Senior
Michael Nerger (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) singled with one out and moved to third on a
Jacob Barker (Windsor HS, Severance, Colo.) single to right center. Nerger scored the game's first run on
Jake Huber's (Lockport HS, Homer Glen, Ill.) fielder's choice grounder.
The Cavaliers answered with a run in the bottom half. With one out, Hoban hit Shaun Stackhouse, who stole second and came around to score on Brendan Van Belle's two-out RBI single to left center.
Both pitchers cruised until the sixth, when junior
Mitchell Owens (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) led off with an infield hit. One out later, he was erased on
Griffen Pschigoda's (Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) fielder's choice grounder. A walk to freshman
Joe Marcucci (Rolling Meadows HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) and an infield hit by senior
Sam Beyer (Legend HS, Parker, Colo.) loaded the bases with two outs, but Baker induced a comebacker by
Brett Benedetti (Cherry Creek HS, Greenwood Village, Colo.) to escape unscathed.
Cabrini got to Hoban for the go-ahead runs in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single by Brandon Loner and a sacrifice fly by Stackhouse.
Nerger drew a walk from reliever Drew Swire leading off the seventh and reached third with one out. However, Swire got fly outs from Huber and Owens to end the threat. The Vikings stranded two runners in the eighth and couldn't take advantage of Huber's two-out double in the ninth, as Billy Swanstrom finished up to get the save.
Baker (1-0) gave up seven hits in six innings, walking two and fanning three to earn the win. Hoban (0-1) went six frames as well, surrendering eight hits while issuing one walk and striking out seven. Junior
John Hayes (Cherry Creek HS, Greenwood Village, Colo.) threw two scoreless innings in relief.
