Jeni Crain scored 18 points in the Vikings loss on Saturday night.
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Augustana fell to Millikin 66-60 in overtime on Saturday, February 1 in the Carver Center. The Vikings struggled from the field, shooting just .303 (23-76) and dropped the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin contest to Big Blue despite holding a 55-45 advantage on the boards.
Head coach
Mark Beinborn's team held a 20-16 advantage after one quarter but in the second and third quarters poor shooting haunted the home team. In the second quarter the Vikings shot .294 (5-17) from the field and in the third period they made just two of 15 from the floor (.133). In those two stanzas Augustana connected on just 7 of 32 (.218) from the field, including only 1 of 13 (.076) from three point range.
Trailing 43-39 heading into the fourth quarter the Blue & Gold finally found the range and made seven of 15 field goals (.467), including four of five from three point range. Senior
Mia Lambert (Macomb HS, Macomb, Ill.) made a basket with just :18 left in regulation to tie the game at 58-58. The Vikings forced a turnover with three seconds left and were able to inbound the ball in the frontcourt. After a timeout they ran a play for
Alexis Jones (Marist HS, Chicago, Ill.) but the shot was off and the two teams moved into overtime.
In the extra period Augustana was unable to maintain the hot shooting from the fourth quarter. The Vikings hit just one of nine in the overtime and were outscored 8-2 to account for the final score of 66-60.
Senior
Jeni Crain (Woodstock HS, Woodstock, Ill.) led the Vikings in scoring with 18 points and she also hauled in six rebounds. Jones had 13 points and 15 rebounds while Lambert scored 11 points and in the process she set a new school record for three point field goals made in a single season. She now has 49 three point field goals this season and she broke the previous mark of 48 held jointly by Kristen Pence (2003-04) and
Jennifer VanWatermeulen (2016-17).
Sophomore
Lauren Hall (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) only scored three points but she hauled in 18 rebounds.
Abby Ratsch led Millikin in scoring with 16 points.
Augustana is now 10-10 overall and 5-6 in the CCIW while Millikin moves to 13-7 and 6-5 in the league. Augustana will be in action again on Wednesday, February 5 with a 7:00 p.m. home game against Wheaton.
