WAUKESHA, Wis.—Senior
Alexis Jones (Marist HS, Chicago, Ill.) had another big game Saturday to lead Augustana to a 69-56 win over Carroll at Van Male Field House. Jones had game highs of 25 points, 16 rebounds and six assists as Coach
Mark Beinborn's squad evened its overall record at 9-9 and moved to 4-5 in the CCIW. The Pioneers fell to 6-11 on the season and 2-7 in the league.
Jones fed
Mia Lambert (Macomb HS, Macomb, Ill.) for a three-pointer to start the afternoon's scoring. A Megan Madsen layup forged the game's only tie at 3-3 before a pair of Jones free throws gave the Vikings the lead for good. A Jones bucket gave the visitors their biggest lead of the opening period at 10-5, but Kayla Stefka's layup made it 10-7 at the end of the first quarter.
When Theresa Wichser drained a three with 7:56 left in the first half, Carroll trailed just 13-12, but freshman
Macy Beinborn (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) drilled two treys as Augustana went on a 15-2 run over the next 5½ minutes. A
Lauren Hall (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) triple with 2:37 left put the visitors on top 28-14.
Daina Riser's (Lake Park HS, Medinah, Ill.) jumper from the left baseline gave them their biggest advantage of the half at 32-16 and they eventually took a 32-18 edge to the locker room at the half.
Another Beinborn three-pointer at 9:11 of the third quarter matched the Vikings' biggest lead at 37-21, but Wichser answered with one of her own to spark a 13-3 Carroll run over the next 6½ minutes. Brooke Foster's layup with two minutes left in the period drew the Pioneers to within 40-34, but
Chaadah Hodges' (Miller Career Academy, St. Louis, Mo.) first three-pointer of the season got Augustana back on track and Jones scored the team's last five points to make it 48-36 after three.
Jones added her final nine points in the fourth quarter as the Vikings kept Carroll at bay. The margin dipped below double digits only briefly. Beinborn and Lambert each scored three points to push the advantage to 69-54 before Carroll's Alyssa Cruz dropped in a layup at the buzzer to account for the final.
Jones' 25 points came on 6-of-11 shooting from the field and 13-of-15 from the foul line. Beinborn knocked down five of 11 three-point attempts on her way to 17 points and Lambert chipped in with 11.
The Pioneers were led by Sierra Grubor's 15 points.
Augustana finished the afternoon 21 of 56 (.411) from the floor, including nine of 24 (.375) from beyond the arc. The Vikings also converted 14 of 17 (.824) free throws and dominated the glass by a 41-22 margin. Carroll shot .345 (19-55) from the field, .304 (7-23) from long range and .579 (11-19) at the free throw line. The Pioneers committed a dozen turnovers to the Vikings' 20.
Augustana is back on the road on Wednesday, January 29, traveling to Elmhurst, Illinois to square off with the Bluejays. Tipoff at Faganel Hall is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
